With apologies to Jaap Brand, this is his Nerdy Gurdy with some extensive modifications, I don't know if it is better but it is certainly different. Note to Folk Police: If they had electricity, computers and amplification in the 15th Century, this is how they would have done a a gurdy! www.thingiverse.com/thing:4814419

were the body parts 3d printed or laser cut plastic sheets?
The body parts were 3mm plywood, apart from the yellow plastic parts
Looks like fun. When is it open?
I was thinking of going into cad and making a different bridge and thought, "Someone has probably already done this." And google brought me here lol. This is awesome! I gotta try it.
great !!
Very cool video
I apologize for not paying more attention to this project at the time. I never saw the video to show that it actually works. VERY nice work, Chris.
Hello, Chris.... most interesting!! I do not seem to find the files on thingiverse to cut the wood pieces for the Nerdy Gerdy. I see the .STL files there....
Same question: Great video. No guy wires/cords?? What kind of mast is that?
It is a motorised 40 ft matt by Gary MM0CUG, pm me and I will give you his phone number. I think he has a Web site
these reviews are gold . because its already a pyramid scheme of sales people on commission.. paid to sell these things . i much prefer honest reviews from the customer who wants satisfaction value and reasonable longevity
Thanks, do you have the scad files? Hope to use this with my norcal high school choir students.
What if i build it with 2" x 3" is it ok with this size?
Can I adopt you as a grandpa or uncle? Lol. Helpful and adorable!
@aikonaazi Chris does an off the shelf extruder and hotend install on the Guider without mods? If not, where do I get the CAD drawings?
Hi Mr Chris, my name is Laurentiu. I have a Guider 2 and from yesterday I got a problem. My bed doesn’t stop hitting and I have to close it because is getting hot close to bed limit temperature very fast. If you don’t mind can you please give me an advise?
Brilliant!
I’m building my own mpcnc and I feel like I’m doing it with an old friend. Thank you for hanging out with me on this beautiful autumn South Carolina Saturday afternoon and for making this video, Sir. It’s very well done.
You are going to have great fun with your burley!
Thanks for the discussion. Be it resolved, get the dust out of there. I just started milling with my Primo and needed to do something about the sawdust issue. I happened on your thingiverse dust shoe, followed you here and will give it a go.
Hi Chris - I'm back again and have to warn you I may end up being like the unwanted inlaws that came for a visit and didn't leave .... My Guider 2 has starting acting up lately where it decides to freeze in the middle of a print with the screen going blank and it leaves everything powered up including the hot end and bed. There's a nice little burnt hole in my build surface now as a result too. It doesn't do this all the time, in fact very infrequently, but the mere chance of it happening has me digging and researching the possible conversion over to an open source board, and your video is about the only reference I have so sorry for being a pest. After studying your video many times and looking over your thingiverse files a question has arisen about the endstops. Did you keep the original optical endstops in the guider or did you install new ones (such as mechanical etc.). I also see that Flashforge placed the x/y/z endstops at the MAX positions and not the more common MIN positions but I guess that the firmware can sort all that out. Also, is there a chance that you could take some additional pictures of your controller board and extruder wiring from different angles and send them to me, or post somewhere, for me and others to study? I'd really appreciate it as I suspect I will be embarking on this conversion this coming winter after I am driven inside from the yardwork here in Canada. Finally, I saw what looked like a few tiny buck converters in your controller wiring and am wondering what they are powering ? The optical endstops maybe ? There's also one in the extruder stuck to the top of the stepper motor that I can't figure out what it's up to. Anyway, cheers from sunny Canada and thanks for your help (and patience!). Lewis
Let me tell you. I got a CR-10s Pro V2 after looking around at printers for a good deal, or so I thought. It was new out of the box and I got about 100 hours of pretty good print quality, then it was problem after problem. I've replaced almost every part (fans, software, driver motors, driver gears, hot end, bowden tube, bed, and a few other odds and end), on time of having to modified the thing so it will stay level more than one print, it was also very very loud with a load, and the stock bed was a nightmare, on top of silly little problems that popped up after I fixed something. Bottom line is I hate it. I also have an ultimaker S5 that is only for work loads, so the bar was set high, but I will say, as you said. Pay the extra money for a good printer.
Chris - Did you swap out the heated bed temperature sensor or keep the stock one ? I see you have EPCOS100K in your config file but I'm not sure if I need to replace the one on the bed already. Thanks.
I used the stock heated bed sensor. I didn't really think about it in the configuration file.
I believe this is no longer a Flashforge.... It is now a Frankenforge Guider III lol. Thinking of doing the same thing as like you said, the firmware is pretty closed down, and also there is a distinct lack of PWM fan control.... Which I really seem to need for ASA printing, no fan means the material stays soft too long and print quality suffers. Having the fan on (at the only setting, 100%) equals better print quality but poor layer adhesion. I was thinking of using an additional extruder board in the control cab to convert to the ribbon cable, as it appears to be lighter weight and would maintain the stock look than running a homemade loom. I'd have to look at the board, but I figure worse case I could remove the discreet components and jumper the traces in the cabinet.
I'm also mulling over a conversion of a Guider 2. It's an older machine but has some quirks and when I bought it used the firmware had not been upgraded. Ever. Too scared I'll brick the controller now. There's precious little info online about these units. Would be good to form a little group somewhere where we could chat and swap ideas. What's the little smt circuit board that's stuck on the top of the extruder motor ? Can't seem to puzzle that out.
Nice work
can you use Fusion 360 for the cad drawing then a slicer ?
Yes I always use fusion 360 then the dremel slicer which is basically cura
@@Aikonaazi awesome thanks for the response
great! tnx!
Do you still have the old motherboard? Would you consider giving it away. I’m in desperate need for a new one as my printer has gone haywire.
Sorry the old motherboard has gone to the recycling. You might try the electronics I suggest in this video.
Very nice informative video, appreciated Thank you! Convincing me to get Dremel.
Great video thanks, How large is your cutting area on your Primo?
350 x 700mm thanks!

Very wholesome, thank you!
Great video. No guy wires/cords?? What kind of mast is that?
I love this project, I may will printed thanks for shared
What's the highest you can print reliably on the Guider 2?
This is amazing. I do think you might get slightly better results (not worth a complete rebuild, but maybe worth looking into for future builds) using a servo motor instead of a stepper motor. It'll be less noisy and have better power consumption (good for when on battery), and be slightly more even for speed. But that's nitpicking. Because this is an amazing project!
Hadn't thought of using a servo motor, could be good! I did think of using a brushless of the sort used by model planes but it probably needed too much gearing, would have taken less space though.
Can you share this in thingiverse?

hi nice mod but cant find you on thingiverse also can you tell me how this is done as i have a skr 1.4 and ive took all my electronics out plus wondering about the firmware can you let us all know how you did it please
Hi I must get round to uploading the stls to thingiverse. If you let me know which files you require I can make sure they are up there first. I used smoothieware firmware which is very easy to edit, life is too short to get your head around Marlin. I will upload the smoothie config file to thingiverse as well so that you cab flash your SKR 1.3. If I havnt done it in the next coupla days please remind me. Sorry I forgot to upload the files, I have so many projects on the go that sometimes I forget!

Why not do both? Build machine square AND have dual endstops? Dual endstops are pretty simple to add / configure.
perhaps I would add some woody plates to improve resonance. it is not everything that plastic can do. But great work!
@G1OCN should do ok there I guess lol, good work both of you
Hi you using marlin??if so like to do a vid thnx
Hi I dont ues Marlin, life is too short. Smoothieware works fine for me.
you're an amazing craftsman Chris!! Do you mind if I share this on twitter? I would love to buy something like this if you sell them?
By all means share. I do not make them for sale but there are loads of kits out there, just do a search on "Nerdy Gurdy"
Thank you for your review! Is it posible to communicate, that is manage printing and sending 3D model files to the printer over ethernet/WIFI or USB without using some sort of online cloude service? That is, I don't like to be depentent on an online service. If I don't connect online what functionality will I be missing?
you can connect with a USB printer cable and print direct from the dremel slicer without using any on line stuff. Personally I just save what I want to print on a usb stick, put it in the printer and print. Much less hassle.
@@Aikonaazi Thank you for your answer!
i'm going to try the wheel as a replacement for the one in the north american kit with a maple veneer, wish me luck! Printing right now...
If you are going to veneer it you might need a slightly smaller wheel. It works fine without veneer. I can send youthe stl for a smaller wheel to allow for the veneer if you want it. Let me know and if you want it give me the thickness of your veneer.
Now you just need to automate the keys 😉
Hehe, just hold my beer!
Don't apologize, I love it! I've said it before: why make it more Gurdy if you can make it more Nerdy!
Thanks for a brilliant design, Jaap and I would like to emphasize that it does not need changing, I only did it because of the lockdown, because I could and because I am a nerd who loves tinkering with things!
I've seen some wonderful lockdown projects but this one takes the crown. Absolutely a cracking good effort, well done.
Thanks! Always good to hear from a Kiwi!
a cranking good effort!
Looks incredible, I love the butterflies! You've certainly given me inspiration for building my own Nerdy 🙂 Btw, I think you may have a little too much cotton on the strings. Or at least that's what I've heard can cause the more abrasive sound.
Glad you liked it, I have since repainted it and added lots of butterflies and flowers. You are probably right about the cotton, I use little to none now! Unfortunately because of a slight disability on the right side I find it difficult to maintain cranking for more than a coupla minutes so I am designing a new version which is self cranked and also has sympathetic strings. Keep an eye out for the new build log!
I have a Guider II which has over 10,000 hours on it, I think it would be a great candidate for these upgrades. Thanks for sharing.
